Art and Design Art, craft and design education is concerned with the transmission and transformation of cultures. Students learn to understand and value images and artefacts, western and non-western, contemporary and from other times, and to understand the contexts of their production. They learn to work confidently and creatively with a range of traditional media and new technologies, appreciating and enjoying intelligent making. They reflect critically on their work and that of others, making reasoned judgements about quality, value and meaning, while developing their interest in the visual arts and an understanding of the creative industries.
Music Music is a unique form of communication that can change the way people think, feel and act. Music forms part of an individual’s identity and develops our competence, creativity and self-esteem. It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. It helps us to celebrate and collaborate with others, and to understand diversity. Music therefore makes an important contribution to helping young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. NAME (the National Association of Music Educators) provides an active and vibrant professional network for everyone involved in music education and represents practitioners at a national level.
Dance Dance is a distinct area of experience fundamental to human culture and as such has the potential to offer unique learning opportunities within the school curriculum. It makes a special contribution to both physical and arts education, supports learning in other subjects and facilitates the development of key skills. Dance helps to promote physical fitness and well-being, contributes to pupils’ understanding of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and provides a means of expression and communication distinct from other art forms. As one of the major art forms, its intrinsic value lies in the possibilities it offers for the development of pupils’ creative, imaginative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacities and in enabling young people to find their own voice as creator, performer and critic.
